What’s Up with Swallowing Bowling Balls?
Ever think something like, Yikes, I’ve got a lump in my throat the size of a bowling ball? Your chest feels heavy and tight, you haven’t taken a deep, oxygenating breath in….days? And that grating sound – that’s not your co-worker forcefully dealing with another paper jam; that’s your teeth, clamped tight and a’ grindin’ away. You know what we’re talking about, don’t you? That feeling you get when you’re a bit anxious about taking a risk, stepping out, trying something new or challenging like pushing a “growth edge.” Those are the times when you have to gulp hard, swallow the bowling ball and go for it! Maybe for you, the lump sits lower– in the pit of your stomach. Muscles you didn’t even know you had are clenched tight, and your poor belly is making these weird yowling sounds that you have to smile away during meetings…
Well, that’s what we call the BBT’s – Bowling Ball Terrors. Terrors like…being wrong [or said correctly, “not being right”]. Not being good enough. Not being smart enough. Not being something enough. Maybe you surrender your power when you think about what others think…of you. Of being found out as a failure. Perhaps you’re afraid of taking risks, or going for your dreams. Or of not having any dreams to go for. Maybe just thinking about the future and the unknowns it holds brings on a feeling of lightheaded panic.
Bowling Ball Terrors not only terrorize you, they terrorize teams. At the very time you need to be at your best, and you need your team to be stellar, BBT’s will have everyone hunkering down, showing up with that deer-in-the-headlights look.
